forgotten bookmarks
Such a coincidence!
While web-surfing a few days ago, I came across this charming blog: forgottenbookmarks where old books are shown with obscure ephemera found inside each, presumably used as bookmarks...
So that night I pulled out a book to look up some card-playing rules, and a surprise fell out! A note in my Grandma's handwriting, evidence of the card-playing with their friends that we always heard about. (scanned below) Isn't it funny when the universe does that to you?
During their youth, Grandpa and Howard had a brief adventure opening a diner together in a converted railroad car in Florida.
^^^ and these were their playing cards, natch :) ^^^

four random things found while web surfing on a rainy morning
1. fun website - though you need a good connection & download speed to optimize the experience:
a unique calendar by fashion label Uniqlo
2. calling this "French line dancing":
(from "Band of Outsiders" by Jean-Luc Godard)
3. Kirsty MacColl
this was great club music back in the day
Kirsty MacColl died too young, in a tragic boating accident - love her music
4. human ingenuity is awesome - I want to ride on this:
"Lawrence is now one of only two cities in the country to operate pedal-powered rides like this. The idea originally came from Europe, where the vehicles are popular in places such as Amsterdam and in German cities."

because fashion makes me happy
random stuff I came across during early morning visits to favorite fashion blogs...
gown created by TerraCycle - more than 1,800 flowers were individually cut and sewn from 600 Peanut M&M wrappers!
Hey! My favorite French fashion blogger also kayaks! Here she is at Friends Lake in the Adirondacks:
(wearing leopard-print pants, natch)
{Garance Doré photographed by Scott Schuman}
"I hope I don't die for a long time - I still got things I wanna look at."
(line from Harmony Korine film for Proenza Schouler)
(most likely no one else would enjoy this - reminds me a little bit of .. American Beauty & Precious)
